Working memory is narrow, so structure matters

People can hold only a small amount of active information at once, so external structure reduces mental load.

Takeaway

Good notes, diagrams, and interfaces work partly by moving memory into the environment.

What I learned

Working memory is the limited mental workspace used to hold and manipulate information right now. When too many details compete for that space, reasoning gets harder.

Why it matters

This explains why lists, sketches, labels, and visible state are so helpful. They let the environment carry some of the burden.

How I can use it

  • Write intermediate steps down.
  • Group related information.
  • Avoid making people remember hidden state in a tool or explanation.
